Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in Medieval German History, in the Department of German and Dutch, working with Professor Christopher Young and Dr Mark Chinca. The vacancy has been created in the context of an AHRC- funded project on “Kaiserchronik: Literature and History in the German Middle Ages”, with additional funding from the Cambridge Humanities Research Grants Scheme.

The role of the Research Associate

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out four assignments in support of the project:

1) Synthesize the latest as well as the most important older scholarly literature on history-writing in the twelfth century. Concretely, the RA will write overviews suitable for inclusion in the introduction to the critical edition, as well as shorter contributions for the textual commentary, with a focus on the following contexts and aspects: chronicle writing as a genre, and how the Kaiserchronik fits (or does not fit) with contemporary norms and expectations; interest in Rome and Roman / imperial history among twelfth-century elites; the emergence of a mode of history writing as “serious entertainment” (N.F. Partner) embracing writers such as Geoffrey of Monmouth and Godfrey of Viterbo.

2) Write a major journal article on one of the aspects listed above or on some related topic.

3) Help with the organization of an international conference on Charlemagne to be held in February 2017 at the German Historical Institute London.

4) Contribute to the public engagement work of the project. 


Qualifications 


Candidates will normally be expected to have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of appointment. Essential skills include: a fluent knowledge of German and English, a good reading knowledge of medieval Latin, an ability to work with primary historical sources and the relevant secondary material, and good bibliographical skills, including relevant IT skills (or the willingness to acquire these). Good organizational skills and ability to work as part of a team are also essential. An ability to read Middle High German is not essential, as the Research Associate will have access to the already completed English translation of the full text by the project leaders. 
You will be based in a thriving research community in German Studies at Cambridge, with opportunities to participate in German, history and cross-disciplinary seminars throughout the University. There will also be opportunities to contribute to teaching within the Department, supervising and examinations.

Salary for this post will be in the range £28,982 - £37,768 per annum. The appointment will run from 1 October 2016 (or as soon as possible thereafter), for a period of twelve months, and is subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three months.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2017 in the first instance.
