La Bretagne carolingienne

Entre influences insulaires et continentales

Carolingian Brittany

Continental and insular influences

Brittany's history in the high Middle Ages, when stripped of legend, takes its place in the wider context of the changes wrought by Carolingian realm. The Armorican Breton kingdom was ephemeral but it gave rise to a tangible economic and cultural richness. Monasteries played an essential role in this, stigmatising their power through the organisation of their networks and thus touching on the imperial authority.

The Carolingian Renaissance, with its reforms, brought about a cultural change. Brittany didn't depart from this vast movement of ideas, but at the same time it preserved certain unique particularities. The articles in this volume address many of the aspects of this period, one of the richest in Breton history
